EVENT UPDATE – Thursday 22 May

We have now finalised the new shortened run start leg, as well as the start times.  We have also finalised the athlete guide and the online athlete briefing is live now to view below.

 FAQ’s

Why can’t we swim in the ocean?
The backup ocean course would require moving closer to the Bowls Club into the gutter at high tide; with a large surf and high tide forecasted, we would have little beach remaining.

Why can’t we swim a shorter course in the creek?
Water quality tests at the creek mouth, the Sprint start, and the Olympic start would all need to pass which is unlikely. Based on the murky water above the bridge, it’s likely the water below the bridge will also be polluted once the tide turns on Sunday morning.

How long will the starting run be?
Depending on your category, it will be between 100m and 500m.

Where will the starting run be held?
Preferably on the beach, but given the limited sand, it will most likely take place on nearby paths, with a rolling start.

Will the Cycle and finishing run distances change?
No — the cycle and final run course distances will remain as originally advertised, as confirmed today’s (Tuesday 20 May) at the athlete roundtable.

I previously requested a credit/transfer/refund from March, what happens now?
All requested submitted up to 5.00pm Tuesday 20 May 2025 will be processed in due course in accordance with the Terms and Conditions.

I do not wish to do the run-cycle-run, what are my options?
As per the T&Cs you may request a credit before the 48hour curfew, to any event within the next 12 months for the same value with out penalty.

Aquabike – what about us?
The aquabike will feature a Le Mans start that will be less than 100m into transition. Your finish line remains at the Run Exit gate of transition as usual. Credits are also available.

Teams – what happens to my swimmer?
For all classes of teams, the swimmer can be the starter runner. Or the swimmer can be replaced by any other runner or the finishing runner. Credits are also available.

EVENT UPDATE – Wednesday 21 May

As you may be aware, we have experienced heavy downpours and consistent rainfall over recent months. This has had a lasting impact on the water quality in Cudgen Creek. We were on site Tuesday conducting a range of safety assessments.

While the water has started to clear — and conditions are expected to continue improving with the high tides — authorities have advised us to seek formal water quality testing. However, we have been informed that the creek may not pass these tests.

Late Tuesday afternoon, we convened an athlete roundtable to review our options. This included our crew, event staff, three triathlon club representatives, an AusTriathlon representative, a local coach, and two athlete representatives. We discussed the available options, including cancellation, a duathlon, or a run-cycle-run format.

Given the likelihood that it won’t be safe to swim in either the creek or the ocean (our backup swim course), we’ve made the decision to proceed with a run-cycle-run format. The decision was made as early as possible to provide you with additional time to make suitable travel and accommodation adjustment.

We understand that not everyone will be pleased with this change. However, NX has chosen to proceed with the event in consideration of the health and well-being of our participants.

As per our terms, no partial refunds or credits will be offered for this change to a duathlon. The event terms and conditions still apply pursuant to credits.

The first run will be a rolling start into a short distance run to transition. Full details will be included the Wednesday evening communique with the updated Athlete Guide. We’re also planning to inject some extra fun and energy into both the starting run and the finish — it is likely to be the final event on the calendar this season, and we’re expecting beautiful weather.
